Tan Dun's THE MAP is an ambitious project which draws on his discovery of music from the far-flung corners of the globe. The majority of his discoveries were unearthed in China's Western Hunan region, where the talented musician captured a number of field recordings on camera. Using these recordings as a basis for a concerto, Tan Dun subsequently split the music he heard into 10 movements, named them THE MAP, and reconfigured them with the help of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Performances at the Boston Symphony Hall and New York's Carnegie Hall followed in early 2003. Then, in late 2003, Tan took the project to its logical conclusion by bringing it to the Northern Gate of Fenghuang Ancient Town for a performance aided by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. This release features the concert in its entirety, as well as a fascinating documentary which charters the origins of the piece.
